Summary:

‍Filament built comprehensive systems to drive data integrity and data certainty for companies in the mobility space (Automakers, OEMs and Enterprise Fleet Organizations). Our hardware, software, and service solutions allow connected devices and machines to securely interact with and transact value against distributed ledger technology such as a blockchain.

At Filament, I led teams at the intersection of product, engineering, sales and marketing to design and deliver Filament’s blockchain platform across the automotive and mobility industry.

As a product-driven person, I’m compelled to say that I am glad Blockchain is out of vogue. Distributed Ledger Technologies, like Blockchain, are incredibly powerful, but they are not a technical panacea. They should not replace traditional databases when speed and edit capabilities are needed. They should not replace ledgers when only  immutable data is needed. Blockchains / DLT, we’ve found, is best used in conjunction with the above technologies in order to provide a better mousetrap.

At Filament, we did exactly that. We built solutions (that happened to use Blockchain-based components) to deliver the data integrity required for trustable machine-to-machine transactions.

Note: Our products delivered ROIs > 150%, outperformed direct and indirect competitors and ultimately drove Pilot and Production level interest from Ford, Daimler, BMW and Kanematsu. Unfortunately, due to changes in follow-on funding, Filament has (as of Feb, 2020) closed its doors. It was a wild and amazing ride filled with intriguing product journeys, unique client work and ultimately fantastic people.
